Question: What is MDR1? How can it affect my puppy?
Answer: MDR1 is a sensitivity to certain groups of drugs, mostly the parasiticide ivermectin group, and certain gastroprotectant and anti-cancer medications. Symptoms are: vomiting, diarrhea, lethargy, seizures, or coma. This mutation is common in herding breeds like the Australian Shepherds, even though many other dog breeds are affected as well. The dosage of these drugs in heart-worm, flea, and tick preventatives should not cause any symptoms in dogs that carry MDR1.
Your puppy has a 50/50 chance of carrying one copy of the gene and is at risk for having adverse drug reactions. He/she may not be as severely affected as a dog with two copies of the gene, but some normal dosages of drugs could still have potentially severe effects on the puppy. Please inform your veterinarian if your puppy carries this; it is crucial that they know this information before prescribing any drugs.

Question: What food do you feed your dogs and why?
Please take a look at my recommended foods page I have more information on there. I feed Farmina dog food. First thing is the food is very high quality. Second, my dogs love it! I have tried many different types of dog foods for my girls(pawtree, lifesabundance, victor, plus many more). Either my dogs did not like the food or it did not have enough nutrients for breeding dogs or their stool was not how it should be.
I love to add the superfood seasonings and freeze-dried treats from PawTree and they’ll eat it right up! If you have anymore questions about the food contact me and I can help you out! pawtree.com/BlueMountainAussiedoodles
